Check if their CNC automotive machining is in-house or outsourced. For automotive aluminum extrusions, ask about handling springback and distortion—it's a different skillset than steel.

I once almost went with a vendor who quoted $38,000 for a die set, while the next bid was $44,000. Then I dug in:

If you can't visit, schedule a video walkthrough. Watch how they organize the tooling storage and maintenance area. It tells you more than their sales pitch.
Step 5: Verify Quality Process Standards
ISO 9001 is table stakes. For automotive, I look for IATF 16949:2016 certification, or at least active implementation. Also check if they use APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) level 3 or higher.
A vendor who can show you their control plan for a previous job with similar automotive die requirements is far more reliable than one who says, "We've never had a problem."
One thing I missed early on: ask about their design engineering team. If all die design is outsourced, you lose the ability to iterate quickly during tryout. A vendor with in-house design for both the automotive stamping dies and the CNC machining can respond faster.
